A diagnosis of dementia is often seen as a death sentence. People are frequently told during their doctor’s visit to put their affairs in order. However, what the estimated seven million people living with dementia may not realize is that they can expect to live anywhere from eight to thirty more years after diagnosis.

That is a lot of life left to live—years filled with hugs and kisses from family, laughter and tears with friends, more than 3,000 sunrises and sunsets, and yes, the inevitable challenges that come with a mind navigating brain failure.

But those challenges do not have to define our residents’ golden years.

Through Functional Pathways’ Pathways to Engagement program, we help those living with dementia increase their quality of life and maintain as much independence as possible. As part of the program, our therapists conduct a holistic evaluation, getting to know each resident deeply. We assess their current functional level using Teepa Snow’s Gems®, with a focus on how dementia affects day-to-day experiences and overall well-being.

We take the time to learn each resident’s past occupations, hobbies, routines, and preferences to develop a personalized plan of care that meets their unique needs. Using our clinical expertise and compassion, we design environments that allow residents to shine. By breaking down functional tasks and using Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care® techniques, our therapists can help reduce negative reactions, support engagement, and even minimize the need for antipsychotic interventions.

The quality of life for those living with dementia depends on having the right support systems. Our program emphasizes caregiver education—reducing stigma, improving communication, and ensuring continuity of care through each transition. When residents are engaged in meaningful activities and supported by informed caregivers, both experience a greater sense of purpose and connection.

A dementia diagnosis does not have to be as frightening as it first appears. It can be an opportunity to come together and rediscover what truly connects us—the shared human purpose to care for one another.
