When we started writing these blogs over a year ago they gave us some general guidelines to go by. One of those guidelines was to have around 300 words. While I think that is a pretty good rule of thumb to follow it is not going to take me that many words to make my point.

My point is Managed Care is here to stay in some form or another. We can talk about ACO’s, Medicaid expansion, dual eligibles or Medicare Advantage plans it does not matter, the same themes continue to emerge.

If you have not been paying attention our country’s needs/wants and it’s ability to pay for those are not the same. We have to figure out how to get medical costs to a manageable situation. That is where managed care principles have to be applied.

You are going to have to show that what you do is the most cost effective way to do it. You are going to get patients in faster, keep them for less time, have better outcomes, do it for less money and be able to back it up with hard data. End of story. Sorry, I wish I could have said it in a nicer way.

Here, my friends, is the best part of the whole deal. It is like your old school teacher or coach used to do. They made you do things you hated to do but it was the best thing for you. I have a boss right now that is that way. Thank you damn it!

When you take the time to figure out the metrics of your business it will only serve to make you a better manager and your business better run. In the context of this conversation it is length of stay, hospitalization rates, cost per diagnosis and patient satisfaction. Those are the holy grail of your business.
